Trailer Interchange

Covers damage to trailers you don’t own while they’re in your possession under a trailer interchange agreement.

What It Is

Trailer interchange covers physical damage to a non-owned trailer, container, or chassis while it’s in your care under a written trailer interchange agreement. It’s common in intermodal and drop-and-hook operations, where carriers routinely pull equipment owned by others.

What It Typically Covers

  • Damage to a non-owned trailer from collision, theft, fire, and other covered causes, while in your possession under an interchange agreement
  • Many policies include loss of use charges up to a set amount

Common Gaps to Watch For

  • A written agreement is typically required. Without one, you may need non-owned trailer physical damage coverage instead.
  • Your own trailers need physical damage coverage.
  • The freight inside needs cargo coverage.
  • Limits per trailer. Make sure the limit covers the value of the equipment you pull.

Who Usually Needs It

Carriers that pull trailers, containers, or chassis owned by others under interchange agreements, especially intermodal and drop-trailer operations.

What Underwriters Consider

  • How often you pull non-owned equipment, and whose
  • The value of the trailers
  • Your loss history
  • Where equipment is parked

Questions to Ask

  • Do I have written interchange agreements for the equipment I pull?
  • Is my per-trailer limit high enough?
  • Are loss of use charges covered?
  • Do I need non-owned trailer coverage for equipment without an agreement?

All coverage is subject to policy terms, conditions, and exclusions.
